When one thinks of electronic cigarettes, they typically conjure images of water vapor that looks a lot like smoke or the LED light illuminating at the end of a high tech hand-held electronic device. Electronic cigarettes do contain disposable cartridges, but they are less likely to end up as litter because e-cigarettes can be smoked indoors and when cartridges are finished they are neither burnt nor unhygienic to carry. It may seem like minor progress to get rid of cigarette buds being disposed of in public places, but these items cause serious environmental damage, especially in our urban areas which cannot afford any more damage to their already sensitive ecosystems.
E-cigarette companies are looking to the future to figure out ways to make their products even more environmentally friendly. It is already possible to refill some e-cigarette cartridges which would make the entire product reusable. They are also looking into ways to dispose of their batteries after they have been completely used, since batteries have a negative impact on the environment when disposed of improperly. Either way, electronic cigarettes are light years ahead of traditional cigarettes in terms of environmental friendliness.
